SAINTE-MERE-EGLISE: The objective of the American 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment, Sainte-Mère-Eglise, behind Utah Beach, was an important town on the road to Cherbourg. It is famous for the hanging parachutist, John Steele. Paratroopers came down directly into the square on the night of 5-6 June and many were killed. The town was soon taken and was held despite German counter-attacks.
